The 4 dot blouse, explained
A 4 dot blouse is a lined saree blouse shaped by four darts on each side of the front, all meeting at the bust point (the “dot”). Together the darts form a smooth, rounded cup, so the blouse shapes and supports the bust on its own, without innerwear. In tailoring it is also called a four-dart or four-tucks blouse. How the four darts work
A dart is a small, tapered fold stitched into the cloth to turn flat fabric into a curved shape. A 4 dot blouse uses four of them on each side of the front, and all four point to the same place, the bust point:
- From the waist, rising up to the bust point.
- From the side seam, running across to it.
- From the armhole, angled down to it.
- From the bust line near the centre front, meeting it from the middle.
Because the fabric is taken in from four directions around one point, it forms a cup that holds its shape. That is why the exact bust point matters so much in a 4 dot blouse: the master measures it carefully, because all four darts must meet there. The blouse is fully lined, which gives the cup body and makes it comfortable against the skin.

Good to know before you order
- The dart lines show on plain fabric. On a printed, woven or embroidered blouse they disappear into the pattern; on a plain silk they are part of the look.
- Raising the arms: some tailors add a 2–3 inch band at the waist (a “half katori”) so the blouse stays in place when the arms are raised. Ask us whether it suits your blouse.
- The 4 dot is the cut, not the design. Any neckline, back, sleeve or embroidery can go on it.
